Hong Kong Disneyland Awards Young Creative Talent at Disney's Imagination Day 2004 Award Presentation
GUANGZHOU (December 13, 2004) - Hong Kong Disneyland paid tribute to the city's youngest artists today in an award presentation ceremony for Disney's Imagination Day, an annual arts competition developed to inspire children to express their creativity.
For the first time in China, Hong Kong Disneyland extended Disney's Imagination Day beyond Hong Kong to Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai. The theme for Disney's Imagination Day 2004 was the "Story of your Imagination" presented as a creative comic-strip drawing. More than 2,000 imaginative entries from students were submitted within four weeks.
Disney's Imagination Day was originally launched in 2001 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Walt Disney - the master storyteller himself. The competition aims to enhance originality and highlights the importance of nurturing and developing the power of imagination at a young age.
During the award presentation ceremony, more than 25 prizewinners were invited on stage to share their creativity with the audience. Special guests such as Laurie Jordan, Vice President of Entertainment for Hong Kong Disneyland, Jennifer Chua, Director for Strategic Marketing for Hong Kong Disneyland, and Gu Guo Yi, a nationally-renowned famous children's movie director presented each grand prizewinner and outstanding winners from each of the categories with commemorative certificates.
Hong Kong Disneyland Vice President, Entertainment, Laurie Jordan, said, "It was a challenging role to be the judge for the first Disney's Imagination Day in China as there were lots of imaginative entries. We were most impressed with the display of creative storytelling talent."
Hong Kong Disneyland Director, Strategic Marketing, Jennifer Chua, said," it is encouraging to receive an overwhelming entries from young students. The essence of storytelling is creativity and the competition aims to enhance originality and highlights the importance of nurturing and developing the power of imagination at a young age."
Gu Guo Yi, said, "I am sure the young talents in China who have taken part in this year's Disney's Imagination Day, using their imaginations and inspired by their own creativity, will realize that they can make magic."
The grand prize included an official Disney's Imagination Day trophy and RMB500 cash. All the prizewinners also received a special gift from China Fun. All winning artworks from Mainland China and Hong Kong will be published in "Comic Book of Imagination" by Hong Kong Disneyland. A highlight of the award presentation ceremony was a special guest appearance by Mickey Mouse.
All of the creative winning artworks will be exhibited at the South Entrance of Guangzhou Teemall from December 13 to 15, 2004 (Monday to Wednesday), 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

About Hong Kong Disneyland
The Hong Kong Disneyland project was announced in 1999 as a venture between The Walt Disney Company and the Hong Kong SAR Government. With the completion of reclamation for Hong Kong Disneyland Phase I by the Hong Kong SAR Government, theme park and resort construction began in January 2003, with the project now scheduled to open on 12th September, 2005. At opening day, Hong Kong Disneyland will comprise a theme park and two hotels.
The Phase I build-out includes a projected 10 million annual visitor Disneyland-style theme park, 2,100 hotel rooms, and an area for retail, dining and entertainment. The project is estimated to create 18,000 new jobs at opening (both Disney and other employment) growing to 36,000 once the first park reaches build-out. The Hong Kong SAR Government estimated that the first phase of the project will generate a present economic value of HK$148 billion (US$19 billion) in benefits to Hong Kong over a 40-year period.
